The singer, who is nominated for 11 Billboard Music Awards, was the show's early leader with six wins, including top country artist, country song for "We Are Never Getting Back Together" and country album for "Red."

Bruno Mars and his band kicked off the show in silky red suits that matched their silky dance moves, with bright gold disco balls hanging above them.

[...] the awards show, airing live from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on ABC, is less about the trophies and more about the performances.

"First and foremost, gotta thank Goodwill, gotta thank Value Village," Macklemore said to laughs.

Swift is the only U.S. act nominated for top Billboard 200 album for her multiplatinum "Red," which will compete with One Direction's first and second albums — "Up All Night" and "Take Me Home" — Mumford & Sons' "Babel" and Adele's 10 million-selling "21," which won the award last year.

NEW YORK (AP) — James Levine rolled onto the Carnegie Hall stage in his black motorized wheelchair and into a 6-by-6-foot mechanical podium constructed by the Metropolitan Opera.

Belted into the wheelchair, Levine and two aides waited while the podium hoisted him about 3 feet in the air and its interior rotated 180 degrees to leave him facing the audience.

Given a 1-minute standing ovation, he blew a kiss to the crowd in the sold-out 2,804-seat auditorium, raised his fists in triumph and tapped his heart.

After an absence of more than two years caused by a fall that left him partially paralyzed, the Met's music director had returned.

Looking a bit like a starship captain in the commander's chair, Levine conducted the prelude to Wagner's "Lohengrin," Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with Evgeny Kissin and Schubert's Symphony No. 9 (Great) on Sunday afternoon, the first step toward his return the Met next fall.

[...] he was conducting from a chair and by 2011 he took his bows from the podium in the Met's orchestra pit rather than walk on stage.

Timberlake plays a bearded pop folkie in the film, which was to premiere Sunday night at the Cannes Film Festival, about the music scene of early 1960s Greenwich Village.

Young British actor George MacKay is making a splash at Cannes — literally, amid the weekend's torrential downpours — with his compelling central performance in the mythic maritime drama "For Those In Peril."

Set in a fishing town on the stark Scottish coast, Paul Wright's debut feature stars 21-year-old MacKay as sole survivor of a boat accident that killed five others, including his elder brother.

MacKay carries the intense and poetic film as a young man struggling to cope with loss, even as his survival alienates him from his bereaved neighbors.

Playing in Cannes' Critics' Week competition, the movie has garnered strong reviews for its exploration of guilt, masculinity and mythology.

The boundlessly enthusiastic MacKay says even the frigid water scenes were made bearable by "lots of cups of tea ... lots of towels, lots of food."

CANNES, France (AP) — The Coen brothers' resurrection of the pre-Dylan folk scene in Greenwich Village serenaded Cannes with its period music and melancholy tale of a self-destructive, feline-toting musician.

The film stars the relatively unknown Oscar Isaac as a talented but adrift singer-songwriter trying to attract attention after the suicide of his singing partner as he bounces from couch to couch.

Isaac and the cast (Carey Mulligan as a furious, expletive-spewing friend; Justin Timberlake as a cheesy pop folkie) performed their songs live with music supervisor T-Bone Burnett, who memorably collaborated with the Coens on the Grammy-winning hit soundtrack to "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

Set in 1961 on the cusp of Bob Dylan's arrival ("the elephant in the room," Ethan Coen said), "Inside Llewyn Davis" is loosely based on the unfinished memoir by folk singer Dave Van Ronk, "The Mayor of MacDougal Street."

In perhaps the film's most remarkable scene, he, along with Isaac and a cowboy hat-wearing Adam Driver (the "Girls" actor), record the absurd, bouncy "Please, Mr. Kennedy."

DALLAS (AP) — Sophie snaps her fingers and, with her classmates, bounces, twirls and kicks to the tune of West Side Story's "America" blaring through the dance studio sound system.

The 10-year-old, adopted from Russia by U.S. parents nearly nine years ago, is a bright-eyed, carefree fourth-grader who wakes up with a song on her lips and a skip in her step, eager to make the world her stage.

Every adoption involves an odyssey of background checks, reams of paperwork, legal hurdles, medical exams and screenings.

Over the years, children adopted from Russia and other Eastern European countries have thrived with their new families, said Jan Wondra, head of the nonprofit Families for Russian and Ukrainian Adoption, or FRUA.

The HIV-AIDS epidemic, which hit the U.S. in the 1980s, exploded in Russia in the early 2000s, especially among heroin addicts using dirty needles.

Adding to the plight of babies born to HIV-infected, heroin-addicted mothers was the discrimination these children faced in Russia, as well as the reluctance of foreigners to adopt HIV-positive children.

After discussing their options with several U.S. private adoption agencies, the couple decided upon an international adoption, finally settling on Russia.

[...] after two months, the Russian government gave them permission to pick up Sophie.

Petite, with an endless supply of energy, she was motivated early on to sing, dance and act, Vicki said.

The family is making sure that she stays connected to her Russian heritage and culture.

Since she was tiny, the Davises have read to her Russian fairy tales and other books with Russian subjects.

Made up of 40 men singing in the Russian choral tradition, the choir is more than 600 years old, and their concerts incorporate everything from church chants to Russian folk music.

MALMO, Sweden (AP) — Denmark's Emmelie de Forest has won this year's Eurovision Song Contest with her ethno-inspired flute and drum tune "Only Teardrops," despite tough competition from spectacular stage shows by performers from Azerbaijan and Ukraine.

De Forest was followed by second-place winner Farid Mammadov of Azerbaijan, who got 234 points for the song "Hold Me," which he performed on top of a glass cubicle containing a male dancer.

Once again without fail, it produced a mix of bubble-gum pop songs, somber ballads, bagpipes, accordions and bizarrely kitsch musical productions.

In an opening video, soccer great Zlatan Ibrahimovic welcomed the viewers to the competition in his hometown Malmo, in southern Sweden.

While it did not raise eyebrows in most parts of Western Europe — where Eurovision has long been a bastion of gay culture — the act jarred sensitivities in parts of eastern and southern Europe.

At the opening of the competition, contestants marched into the stadium with flags, Olympics-style, accompanied by a choir singing a song especially composed by Swedish super DJ Avicii and ABBA members Bjorn Ulveaus and Benny Andersson.

The festive atmosphere was visible throughout the city of Malmo on Saturday, where residents and visitors blended on the sunny streets waving the flags of their favorite countries.

The internationally known arts festival, founded by the composer Gian Carlo Menotti, will open its 37th season Friday with the traditional speeches, brass fanfare and shower of confetti on the steps of Charleston City Hall.

Original comic book drawings are projected on a two-story screen while actors voice parts to accompany sound effects.
