Westport Rotary Club will present its annual Community Service and Public Safety Awards noon May 17 at the Inn at Longshore, 260 Compo Road South.

Police Sgt. Jill Ruggiero and Police Officer Michael Gudzik will receive Westport Rotary's Community Service Award for collecting toys over the years for less-fortunate children throughout the Westport area. They have spent countless hours of their off-duty time organizing toy collection and distribution through the Westport Police Union's Toys for Tots program. They have collected toys from the police station, Town Hall and local businesses.

Firefighter Nick Marsan and Lt. Tom Richmond will receive Westport Rotary's Public Safety Award for their recent military duty. Marsan was a staff sergeant in Afghanistan in the 102nd Infantry Division, serving as part of the joint operations with the Afghan Army in the Laghman Province. He returned from his one-year tour of duty last November. He was on active military duty with the U.S. Army from 1991 to 1999, has served with the National Guard for the past four years and has been a member of the Westport Fire Department for more than three years.

Richmond recently served in Iraq as a master sergeant with the National Guard. He was a medic and a member of the military advisory logistical team advising the Iraqi medical commander in Wasit Province. He also helped with firefighter training of Iraqi military members.
