The current privileges Westport Taxi receives from the town need to be changed. Currently, Westport Taxi is able to put signs up reserving spaces for their taxis. They have reserved a number of spaces very close to the station, which typically are occupied by cars not in use. These are prime parking spots located right next to the station which have been reserved solely for the convenience of the taxi company and which take prime spots away from commuters who have to struggle to park close to the station. The taxi companies pay the same amount for their permits as commuters, so why do they get to reserve their own spots? When I called Town Hall to enquire about the cab company's arrangement, I was told that any cars can park in those spots without penalty, so why the signs? I would love to put up a sign reserving a spot for myself, as I am sure many other commuters would, but think about the controversy around assigning individual spots.
It's time to end this privilege for Westport Taxi and put them on equal footing with everybody else who uses the station.
