The Staples boys cross country team defeated Westhill 17-46, Norwalk 18-42 and Trumbull 15-48 at home on Tuesday.

Staples Coach Laddie Lawrence was "very pleased" with the outcome of the meet.

Senior captain Ben Aldrich said, "It was a meet we were supposed to win, and I'm glad we were able to."

Going into the meet, Lawrence was confident that his team would be victorious. He said, "It's what I expected the outcome to be. Scouting reports indicated that the other teams top times were not as fast, their average times were not as fast, and their spread was not as good."

Aldrich explains the team strategy was to, "get Jack and I out front, and have our other team members work together to make a solid pack."

Aldrich won the meet with a time of 16:54. He comments, "I'm very pleased with the way I raced. I ran to win, and was able to do so." Right on his tail was senior captain Jack Roche who finished second with a time of 17:16. Following Roche were senior captains Kentaro Higuchi (17:44) and Jeff Caffrey (17:59) who finished fourth and sixth, respectively. Senior captain Matt Wormser (18:17) took seventh.

Aldrich said, "Wormser really stepped up this week."

Juniors Partick Nolan (18:34) and Dean Hefnawy (18:39) came in 10th and 12th respectively. Lawrence said, "Nolan improved his time by 48 seconds which was impressive."

The Wreckers will compete at the Bethel Invitational tomorrow. Lawrence said, "It will be a tougher meet for us. We don't have the depth that we did last year and at a big invitational like this with 20 teams running, you do need depth. I would like to be one of the top 5 teams but I don't know if we're deep enough to do that."
