The Weston girls basketball claimed a 53-50 victory at New Fairfield on Tuesday. Weston Coach Pat Cole said, "We knew that they were a tough team, especially in their gym. We knew this game would be a battle."

Lady Trojan senior captain Brittany Swanson added, "Going into the game, we all had the attitude and mindset that we wanted to beat New Fairfield. In the second game we played against them last year, we ended up losing to them by only 5 points and a year later, we knew we were ready to compete and win. We knew they would be tough competition. We have never beaten them my entire high school career until now."

Cole believes that the defense was the determining factor in propelling Weston to its victory. He said, "I think defensively we stepped it up in the second half which definitely made a clear difference in the outcome. We showed them a variety of sets to keep things fresh and keep them guessing."

Four of Weston's players scored in double figures. Swanson led the way with 15, senior captain Jessica Welsh contributed 14 and juniors Christina Welch and Hannah Hutchins each added 12 points. Swanson said, "Jess hit some key shots during the game including an awesome three pointer at the end of the fourth quarter to give us a lead. Hannah also hit some amazing 3-point shots and handled the ball really well under pressure. Christina stayed really poised when handling the ball and scored some key points as well."

Sophomore Ellie Martin and junior Dakota Sloop were dominant on the glass for Weston. Cole said, "Ellie and Dakota were very effective in terms of our rebounding presence."

Swanson agreed, "Ellie and Dakota are always monsters underneath and got some necessary rebounds."

Swanson is very pleased with the overall team effort. "We have been playing well as a team and we are really beginning to flow well together on the court. I am so proud of everyone."

The Trojans will play at Notre Dame of Fairfield tonight a 7 p.m.
