The Staples girls indoor track team finished second with 95 points in the Central Division championships at home last Saturday. Danbury (188) won the meet, Trumbull (68) took third and Westhill (52) was fourth.
In the 50-meter dash, junior Kelley Hussey (7.23) took third place. Freshman Turner Block (42,75) placed third in the 300-meter dash. Junior Ingrid Johnson (1:43.53) and sophomore Maeve Flaherty (1:46.85) finished in the top four in the 600 meters.
Staples grabbed second place in the 4x240, 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays and set the school record in the 4x240 with a time of 2:18.67. Sophomore Lexie Schachne (9-05.50) won the pole and set the school record in it. Junior Megan Lipset (7-00) took second. Schachne was delighted to set the record and said, "It feels terrific to break a record that was previously set at 9 feet, by Lauren Baker 10 years ago."
Lady Wrecker senior captain Joselyn Henry boosted the team's score in the long jump (15-04.25) in long jump and shot put (32-05.00).
Staples Coach Jesse McCray is delighted about the team's performance in the meet. He said, "All the participants were healthy so they could compete better."
McCray also said that his team has been strong all year and "has the deepest group of sprinters besides Danbury in the county." He notes that this gives the Lady Wreckers a lot of flexibility they are not accustomed to having.
Johnson is optimistic about the upcoming meets. She said, "I think this year our team is extremely strong, and our training and success from previous meets bodes very well for us in the rest of the championship season. We have an amazing group of girls who can most definitely place very high at Class LL and State Open."
