The GFA boys soccer team (2-0) defeated Cheshire Academy 6-4 and Trinity Pawling 3-0 last week. Against Cheshire Academy, senior Spencer Traver had two goals and two assists. Senior captain Jake Becker (Westport) added two goals while senior captain Andy Mondino (Westport) tallied once and had an assist. Sophomore Clay Garner (Westport) also scored off an assist from freshman Conor Eckert. Sophomore Munir Qaddourah also contributed two assists.
Goalkeepers sophomore Ryan Friend and junior Dan Hoffman combined for eight saves. Defensively the Dragons were led by senior captain Rex Tavello and seniors Greg Pallay, Henry Van Zant (Westport), along with junior Harry Garland (Westport). Senior CJ Smith and sophomore Juan Cortes were key contributors in the midfield.
Against Trinity Pawling, Garland scored on a header from Cortes. Qaddourah scored from sophomore Andy Mondino (Westport).
The GFA girls soccer team opened its season last week with with a 7-0 victory over Cheshire Academy and a 4-0 whitewashing over The Masters School 4-0. Against Cheshire, the Dragons scored on three corner kicks and had a 26-9 shot advantage.
Senior captain Ali Rouatt (Westport) opened the scoring with a header off of junior Emily Caldwell's corner kick. Junior Reggie Monroe and Caldwell both scored goals. Sophomore Meighan Grady had two goals and sophomores Caroline Vanacore and Jessica Liu (Westport) also netted goals.
The GFA field hockey team trounced St. Luke's 5-0 in its season-opener on Sept. 13. The Dragons had more than 20 shots and 12 corners. Junior Hayley Sanzone and sophomore Liz McDermott scored in the first half. Senior captains Alexa Sullivan, Idalia Friedson and Crystal Johnson controlled the midfield.
Sophomore Madison Leonard (Westport) scored two goals in the second half with sophomore Caitlin Rummelsburg and Johnson getting the assists. Rummelsburg scored the fifth goal. Defensively, GFA played tremendous as the Dragons allowed zero corners and breakaways.
The GFA volleyball team dropped lost 3-0 at the Convent of the Sacred Heart last week.
In the first game, the Dragons stayed close the entire way until the 20-20 mark when CHS rallied for five straight points. But in the next two games the Dragons were unable to offset the strong serving and hitting attack by CHS. GFA was led by senior co-captains Stephanie Garofoli and Kat Norbom (Westport).
