Sophomore Sarah Cooperman was the hero for the Staples girls water polo team last Saturday (May 7).

Cooperman scored the game-winning goal with 45 seconds remaining in the second overtime in a 10-9 double-overtime home win over Hopkins. Staples raised its record to 2-1.

In the win, Cooperman led the Lady Wreckers with four goals. Junior Gabby Wimer had three goals, senior tri-captain Stephanie Nussbaum netted two goals and senior tri-captain Maddie Mafilios had a goal.

Senior Margot Bruce and sophomore Emily Garber combined for seven saves. Bruce blocked two 5-meter shots.

Later that day, a Staples coed water polo team defeated Wethersfield's coed team 8-3 at a tournament in East Lyme. The Staples boys team followed with a 17-4 win over host East Lyme. Junior David Katter led the Wreckers with eight goals. Classmate Daniel Nussbaum added five goals, sophomore Andrew Bowles tallied two goals and junior Jacob Epstein and freshman Tomas Reinhardt had one goal each.
