Ryan Burke defeated Larry Friedlander in a 36-hole match in the championship flight to win the 51st Longshore Men's Golf Association (LMGA) club championship.
Throughout this tournament, Burke frequently hit 300-yard plus drives, displaying impeccable crisp ball-striking skills, and phenomenal putting performance. During the four rounds of the tournament, Burke produced 21 birdies and numerous scores in the 60's.
Friedlander entered the championship flight by shooting a 75 in the medal play qualifier round. Before getting to the final round, he defeated Skip Lane 2 up in the first round. He followed that up with a 1 up victory over co-medalist Mike Durkin. In the semifinal round, Friedland faced co-medalist Michael Clear in an extremely close match that went to the 18th hole where he won 1 up.
To get to the Finals, Burke started off by beating Longshore Seniors Champion, Sean Doyle in a very close match, 2 and 1 in the first round while firing five birdies. In the quarterfinals, Burke defeated Steve Watson 1 up with both players shooting.
Burke was then challenged by defending champion Phil Corbo in the semifinals, but in the end, he was catapulted by firing five early birdies and an exceptional putting performance in a pulsating 5 and 4 victory.
This set up the 36-hole championship finals match, which pitted the long-hitting Burke against the consistent ball-striking Friedlander. Burke put on a clinic for length and putting in the first 18 holes, producing five birdies, shooting a 66 and taking a 3 up lead. In the second 18 holes, it was Burke's superior shot making coupled with three more birdies that resulted in a 5 and 4 victory on the 32nd hole to secure the Championship title.
LMGA's flight champions
In the First Flight Championship, Michael Stuttman battled Gavin McMahon in a very close match over the first nine holes. Stuttman proceeded to win the 10th, 11th, and 12th holes and coasted to a 3 and 2 victory.
In the Second Flight Championship, Garreth Boyle faced Chris Pulichino. In this match, Boyle was on fire, winning six of the first nine holes and ultimately becoming the Champion with a 7 and 6 victory.
