The Westport Parks and Recreation Department sponsored the fourth race of the 2010 Road Runners program with a 4.1-mile run which started and finished at Compo Beach last Saturday. Nadeem Ahmad of Westport won his first race of the season and led 117 runners with a time of 23:18. Ahmad's time didn't break of 20:35 set by Westporter's Roy Mascolino's (20:35) record, which he set in 1983.
Tom Parise (24:19) of Suffield and Sharon Lemberger (24:32) of Stamford placed second and third. As the first woman finisher, Lemberger's third place finish tied the best place finish ever by a woman runner in the program's history. Steven Marsalese (25:31) of Rye Brooke, N.Y. placed third in the men's division, in fourth overall. Amy Fredericks (26:31) of Norwalk and Westporter Kylie Gould (30:00) were second and third in the women's division, ninth and 27th, overall. Other Westport-Weston residents who finished in the top ten were David Allen (25:38), fifth; Paul Greenberg (26:02), sixth; Casey August (26:19), seventh; Dan August (26:25), eighth; and Bruce Geller (26:45), 10th.

The next scheduled is tomorrow at 8 a.m. with a 4.7-mile run starting at Longshore Club Park. The runners will start at the pool and tennis parking lot and run out the Longshore exit road to the marina parking lot, turning left around the 17th fairway of the golf course, left toward the recreation office parking lot, left at the first tee of the golf course and in front of the Longshore Inn restaurant, and back to the starting line. They will continue straight out the exit road, right on South Compo Road, right on Compo Beach Road, right on Compo Beach entrance road, follow the perimeter roads of the beach, out the beach exit road, straight on Soundview Drive, left on South Compo Road, left on the Longshore entrance road, straight past the recreation office parking lot, left at the first tee of the golf course and in front of the Longshore Inn restaurant, right into the pool and tennis parking lot and finish in front of the pavilion building next to the tennis courts. The record for the 4.7-mile run was set by Dave Peterson (23:26) of Fairfield in 1983. The women's record was set by Mary Dolan-Zengo (28:05) of Wilton in 1998.
All interested persons are invited to participate. Applications for and information about the program are available at the recreation offices at Longshore Club Park at the start of each race or at westportroadrunners.org. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the pavilion located next to the tennis courts and pool area. The weekly fee for the program is $5 (resident) or $8 (non-resident). All participants are reminded to park in the marina or gravel parking lots. Co-sponsors of this year's program include: Pequot Runners, Running Times Magazine, Village Bagels, Runner Roost, Sherpa Training, Road I.D. and Matt Greene of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance.
