Feel like your morning walk isn't helping you shed pounds as quickly as you'd like? You might want to pick up the pace, according to a study published in the newest issue of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.

The research shows that, over time running may produce greater weight loss than walking, especially in men and overweight women.

The study analyzed 15,237 walkers and 32,216 runners over a period 6.2 years. Though both groups lost weight, runners demonstrated higher energy expenditure and a greater decrease in body mass index (which is typically used to determine whether someone is overweight or obese). Because participants in this study were volunteers, they tend to be healthier than the general population.

Further research is needed to determine if the conclusions of this study would be supported in a controlled clinical trial.
