In 2014, The Daily Meal put together its list of the top 50 tacos in the country. The site defined a taco as "meat or vegetables placed onto a warmed tortilla, with the express purpose of folding it and eating it with one hand."
In honor of Cinco de Mayo, take a look at the top 10 tacos in the country, and visit thedailymeal.com for the full list.
More than 200 national food writers lent their expertise to roundup 150 tacos. Experts then voted on their favorites to narrow the list down to 50.
While many of the big taco locations mentioned are not surprising - like Austin and Los Angeles - some of their choice taco cities are no where near the border. The Daily Meal found its number 2 taco in New York, and they even mention a carnitas taco found at El Charrito in Riverside, CT.
According to the food site, the criteria for a good taco has nothing to do with proximity to Mexico.
"Great tacos are simple, with clean, vibrant, and varied flavors, each component able to stand on its own. A perfect taco is balanced in flavor, and not loaded down by extraneous add-ons. The tortilla should be super-fresh and ideally handmade." - thedailymeal.com
