While local leaders celebrate winning a bid to bring the Super Bowl to Houston in 2017, none can say exactly how big the economic impact will be to the city. City and county officials either said they were not sure or referred the question to the bid committee. Greg Ortale, president and CEO of the Greater houston Convention and Visitors Bureau, who was in Boston for the decision Tuesday said the committee does not have a figure yet. “Projections are like trying to nail Jello to a wall,” he said. “We’re four years down the road. There’s still a lot of unknown.
Harris County sheriff's deputy killed by drunken driver

A 16-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Office was killed by an alleged drunken driver who ran a red light early Sunday.

Sgt. Dwayne Polk, 47, most recently assigned to the transportation unit, was in uniform driving his tan-colored Chevrolet Silverado around 3 a.m. at the intersection of West Little York and North Shepherd.

Andres Munos-Munos, 22, sped through the red light at the intersection in his white GMC pickup, crashing into the driver's side door of Polk's truck, said Houston Police Department spokesman John Cannon.

Almost 100 members of the municipal public employees union rose from the benches of the Houston City Council Chambers to call for a stop to the chronic undervaluation of high-end commercial properties. They argue that when business owners exploit a loophole in the state tax code to be taxed at appraised values that are sometimes half of the market value determining a sales price, residential owners pick up the burden and Houston communities suffer. The Houston Organization of Public Employees calculated that the reductions secured by the top 500 properties in Harris County amounts to lost taxes of half a billion dollars for the city and $1 billion for the Read More

Working with partner programs to cover southeast Texas' 18 counties, the Houston Food Bank distributed 76 million pounds last year, providing meals to about 137,000 people each week.

"Because we are able to work from a facility of that size, we can work more efficiently to get more food into the community," Ballard said.

According to the news release, the food bank's increased cooler space almost doubled the amount of fresh produce it provides, which now makes up about 2 million of the 6.7 million pounds of food and household goods distributed monthly.

Add the robbery of a smoke shop Thursday that is within sight of the convenience store and it becomes clear the city is seeing an unusual rash of violent crime, said Lt. Eric Freed, a spokesman with Baytown Police Department.

The only case with a suspect in custody is the attempted robbery Saturday at Alexander Food Store in the 2100 block of North Alexander, a convenience store in a residential neighborhood that Freed said has been robbed before this incident.

According to Freed, a 41-year-old man wearing a mask and carrying a gun walked in and demanded money from the clerk about 11 a.m.

According to Freed, they left in a silver van Freed said was stolen in Harris County.
