Westport property gives many dimensions to 'flexibility"™

Westport is a community known for its waterfront, but the next owners of the colonial house at 21 Catamount Road may not need to leave their own two-acre grounds for recreational activities elsewhere.
There is an in-ground gunite pool, a spectacular outdoor "kitchen" and professionally landscaped gardens on the property, all of which combine to provide a perfect setting for stylish formal entertaining as well as relaxed family living and simple pleasures. In fact, the current owners said they love sitting on the back mahogany porch watching the abundant, beautiful butterflies drink nectar from the butterfly bush, listening to the birds sing and watching amazing sunsets from the patio.
Built in 1940, this house has 4,900 square feet of living space, but it is constructed and laid out in such a way that it does not feel like a cavernous, impersonal place. Rather, it is warm and welcoming. There is a great deal of flexibility, as well as privacy, depending on how the space is utilized. "This is like new, but better," said one of the current owners.
The renovation included an addition at the rear of the house that was so skillfully done that there is no line of demarcation between the original house and new addition. Everything matches, right down to the stone façade on the lower portion of the white wood shingle house.
Special attention was given to the renovation including the exterior landscaping and stone work, which took about a year to complete. Granite rocks were brought to the property and cut on site for the pathways. The landscaping was done in a way that gives it a natural look, yet the plantings were specifically selected for their resistance to deer.
The gardens were also designed to create waves of color in the blossoms throughout the season, which makes for a spectacular view from almost every room.
This house sits on a corner lot with the front entrance facing Catamount Road, however, the driveway is accessed on Sturges Highway.
Inside, there are hardwood floors throughout most of the house; there is a radiant heat wood floor in the family room. The renovation transformed the kitchen from galley-style to a large, gourmet space, and opened it to the family room.
There are five bedrooms, four on the second floor. Each bedroom has its own full bath, The master bedroom suite is quite large and features a tray-inspired ceiling, skylight, gigantic walk-in closet, and a bath that has a steam shower, jetted tub, and granite-covered double sink vanity.
One bedroom at the end of the hall is separated from the others by a door and this room can be accessed either from the front formal staircase or the rear stairs off the kitchen. Also off the kitchen is a fifth bedroom, which has its own full bath allowing it to serve as a guest room or au-pair possibility.
Throughout the summer months, the family that lives here will likely spend more time outdoors than in. There is a great entertaining space on the large, circular granite terrace and the custom built-in grill overlooking the pool and pool house. The grill area is really almost more like an outdoor kitchen. The L-shaped counter is topped in the same granite as the formal indoor kitchen counters. The built-in appliances include a Viking refrigerator and Viking professional grill.
The new Peerless cast-iron steam boiler is excellent for people with allergies or asthma.
