A piece of paradise in a Westport island community

Nature's artwork, millennia in the making, includes a piece of paradise on the island community of Compo Mill Cove surrounded by the waters of Long Island Sound.
Man's complementary handiwork is found in the quality construction of the houses on the island, and one in particular at 46 Compo Mill Cove was built in 2008 with a craftsmanship that makes it as integral to the area as the native sea grass, according to the realtor.
Sandbar, as the 13-room shingle-style beach house is called, was designed and constructed with steel framing to protect against hurricane-force winds and winter storms, and yet the craftsmen gave it a grace and sophistication through the use of premium, and often rare, materials. The house can be almost as breathtaking as the panoramic water views that are available from just about every room. Large paned windows and doors throughout the house allow the scenic views outside to be incorporated into the home's interior design, functioning almost as art work.
This property affords the best in luxurious beachside living on a private island community of sand dunes and sea breezes, while its location is in a convenient and comfortable proximity to Westport's mainland and all of its ample amenities. The island is easily accessible via roadway and footbridge.
The house, which has a cedar shakes exterior, sits on a .33-acre lot. Inside, it has 4,800 square feet of living space, some of which was constructed to mimic the nautical theme outside its doors. The staircase, modeled after classic Paris escaliers, when viewed from a particular angle, resembles the graceful curves of a chambered nautilus shell. Those curves are repeated in the walls of a second floor hallway, which leads to a cozy bedroom that has plank sided walls, built-in storage and a bed reached from a small ladder, giving it a nautical ambiance.
The nautical theme continues in the master bedroom, where his closet and bath is outfitted in teak, befitting the captain's quarters of a majestic ship. The wood floors, 100-year-old oak reclaimed from France, have a fine-weathered patina, which contrast beautifully with the lacquer-like finish of the walls. The color was mixed on site by master colorist Donald Kaufman.
On the main level, beneath the stair and concealed behind a panel in the wall is an elegant wet bar with a marble counter and brass fixtures. There are five wood-burning fireplaces in this house -- in the living room, den, family room, on a screened-in porch and in the master bedroom. The master also has its own screen-in sleeping porch and sitting room. Enjoy sunrises and sunsets from the third-floor decks on the front and back of the house.
The privacy afforded by the home's setting, also allows for the leisurely enjoyment of a freestanding tub and both indoor and outdoor showers.
The gourmet kitchen features marble counters and backsplash and a marble-topped center island, which can accommodate three stools for casual dining and entertaining. The entertainment value of this house and property is enhanced by the outdoor grill that is incorporated into the masonry of the chimney. Outside, there is also a cabana and a spa pool.
