BROOKFIELD -- The Brookfield High girls basketball team secured a 54-52 victory on Senior Night despite a valiant second-half comeback by rival Newtown on Friday.

Brookfield was in control for the entire first half, but the Nighthawks exploded in the third quarter for 20 points to climb back into a game that seemed to be slipping away. The Bobcats, however, were able to hang on, led by the play of seniors Brittany Martelle, Jackie Brown and Claudia Bartoli.

In her pre-game speech, Brookfield coach Maura Keenan referred to Brown, a forward, as the unsung hero of the team. Brown was assigned the difficult task of guarding Newtown's versatile leading scorer, Sara Kelley.

"I thought Jackie did a great job on Sara," said Keenan. "Sara's one of the best players in our league and it's never easy to defend her, but Jackie did as good a job as anyone could."

Kelley led the Nighthawks (10-8, 6-7) with 20 points and Riley Wurtz put in 15.

For Brookfield (15-3, 11-3), Jaimie Bickelhaupt finished with a game-high 21 points. Brittany Martelle poured in 20, including four 3-pointers. Bickelhaupt had a big fourth quarter for the Bobcats with nine points, five of them coming from clutch foul shots.

The first half of the game was all Brookfield, as the Bobcats led 28-14 at halftime.

Newtown coach Shawn O'Brien implemented a three-quarter-court press with six minutes to go in the third quarter. The well-executed press helped the Nighthawks fight their way back into the game. The lead changed hands several times in the fourth quarter.
