The Westport Comic-Con, like the larger events that for years have attracted throngs of similar fans, featured a range of activities in addition to costumer characters, such as talent showcases, merchandise and displays of comic art skills.

Teenage illustrators showed and discussed examples of their work; attendees tried their hand at drawing comic strips and comic books were offered for both sale and given away.

In other areas of the library, attendees in costume could have their photo taken, play video games or be challenged with comic trivia.

Jaina Lewis, the Westport Public Library's teen services librarian, said, A couple of our teen volunteers here at the library, who are huge comic book fans, initiated the idea.

There's some really great artwork on display here.

Because of Comic-Con, Lewis said, "We're seeing different people in the library today that we haven't seen before, and the event tracks with our mission to be a community center and resource."

Saugatuck and Greens Farms -- fall into that service "gap," an interruption that as of Sunday is expected to persist indefinitely as the cause of the crash is investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board, then followed by removal of the wrecked M-8 train cars and repairs of the mangled tracks are carried out by Metro-North.

Commuters are being urged to make alternate travel arrangements as the start of the work week -- and nightmarish commuting conditions -- loom Monday.

Officials, as of Sunday morning, had not announced whether there would be special bus service for rail passengers who normally use the stations in the service blackout zone, or alternatives like car pools.

Greenwich High School entered Saturday's FCIAC quarterfinal against the Staples boys lacrosse team well aware of the damage the Wreckers' high scoring duo of Joey Zelkowitz and Colin Bannon were capable of unleashing.

Making the Wreckers' top two scorers work exceptionally hard to get clear looks at the goal, the fourth-seeded Cardinals used a strong defensive effort to post an 11-8 win against No. 5 Staples in the FCIAC quarterfinals.

With the win, Greenwich advanced to Tuesday's 7 p.m. semifinals where it will face top-seeded Ridgefield at Brien McMahon High School.

Six different players scored in the first half for GHS, which saw junior midfielder Kyle Foote, senior midfielder Michael Ellsworth and junior attack Jamie Paradise each finish the game with two goals.

Said Bulkley: Shawn started off as a short stick, but we had a lot of injuries to defense and he offered to play long pole.

Greenwich struck first, as Paradise received a pass from senior Kelley Jaye and snapped a shot past Staples goalie Cole Gendels just 49 seconds into the first quarter.

With GHS running its settled offense, junior attack Luke Finneran scored off a feed from behind by sophomore attack John Tohir, making it 2-1 with 8:37 left in the first quarter.

The senior attackman snuck a tough angle shot by GHS goalie William Waesche (10 saves) with 9:07 remaining in the second quarter, knotting the score at 3-3.

All rail service at Westport's Saugatuck and Greens Farms stations is suspended today -- and indefinitely -- as part of a broader service interruption between South Norwalk and New Haven in the wake of the Friday evening collision between two Metro-North Railroad trains in Bridgeport, just east of the Fairfield Metro station.

The crash, apparently caused when one of the trains derailed, injured 60 passengers -- six of them in critical condition as of Saturday morning.

The incident, which is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board, is expected to cause massive disruption to both rail commutation throughout southwestern Connecticut and the entire Northeast corridor.

The accident destroyed a swath of tracks -- bending rails and shattering ties -- along the overpass above Fairfield Avenue in Bridgeport, a short distance from the Fairfield Metro rail depot and the city's border with Fairfield.

Written by Robert Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof, it's produced and directed by J.J. Abrams ("Super 8"), who's efficiently rebooted Gene Roddenberry's iconic pop culture franchise into a sprawling, high-tech, high-tension spectacle, adroitly revealing one layer of deception after another with a breathless sense of pace and tempo that keeps the attention riveted.

The "Into Darkness" title is appropriate because the simplistic, characteristically upbeat, lightheartedness and quirky, bantering humor of the original series has been almost discarded in favor of sinister, convoluted global conspiracies, challenging moral ambiguities and a myriad of graphic effects and lens flare-laden set-pieces.

Repeating the capitalist mantra, "expand or die," Henry routinely visits local funeral parlors and cemeteries, ruthlessly determined to buy the deceased's land at bargain prices from grieving children who are uninterested in pursuing their parents' hardscrabble life.

Bahrani collaborated with Hallie Elizabeth Newton on this cliche-riddled, contrived and not-entirely-credible script, developing not only the two primary characters but also subsidiary ones, including Whipple's neighbor and hated rival, Jim Johnson (Clancy Brown) and his son (Ben Marten), Whipple's hard-working wife Irene (Kim Dickens), his unyielding father (Red West), along with son Dean's savvy girl-riend Cadence Farrow (Maika Monroe) and the town's restless "hotie," Meredith Crown (Heather Graham).

To make his point about the sin of adultery, Perry predictably tosses in alcoholism, cocaine addition, domestic abuse and the heavy-handed threat of HIV infection as punishment for the promiscuous.

Up with the Kardashians celebrity Kim Kardashian, the middle sister with the infamous sex tape, proves -- indisputably -- that she has zero acting talent, although she's been astutely typecast as Ava, a rude, gold-digging office assistant who disses primly dressed Judith with bitchy remarks like: Is your fashion icon Delta stewardess?

Bill and about a dozen members of the Mitchell family, representing three generations of the family that owns one of Westport's best-known stores, were there to receive recognition from Operation Hope, the Fairfield-based agency that fights homeless and hunger.

The non-profit Operation Hope, established in 1986, in addition to managing Fairfield shelters for homeless men, women and families, supports a community kitchen, food pantry and affordable housing programs.

The Mitchells are not just known for their philanthropy, but for the lavish fund-raising events they host in their flagship clothing store Mitchells of Westport.

The events, including the more recent addition of the annual Pink Chairs/Pink Aid to award grants to breast cancer-related organizations, provide funding for Near & Far Aid, the Inner City Foundation, Jewish Home for the Elderly, Sacred Heart University, St. Vincent's Medical Center, the Staples High School cheerleaders' annual fashion show, and numerous other organizations and causes.

Michael Rosten, chairman of the Operation Hope board of directors, called the Mitchells' tradition a long-standing, almost institutional commitment for their communities.

Money raised at the gala, including through the live and silent auctions, will support the mission of Operation Hope: "that every person in our community will one day have supportive relationships, hope for the future and a place to call home," said Carla Miklos, executive director of Operation Hope.
